NYU Shanghai campus under construction in Lujiazui
CONSTRUCTION on the New York University Shanghai campus began this afternoon in Pudong's Lujiazui area. It will be the first joint-venture university in China.
The local East China Normal University, which has collaborated with NYU in student exchange programs, is the Chinese partner of the degree-granting institute.
Apart from benefiting Chinese students, the international university is also expected to bring useful lessons to the reform of China's education system.
Just as the Manhattan-based NYU, the Shanghai campus in the Lujiazui Financial and Trade Zone will not be enclosed by walls, symbolizing the school's open spirit, and is expected to open as early as September 2013.
More than 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students will be admitted for each academic year.
Chinese students will have to pass the college entrance exam to win a place in the international university, according to an earlier report.
Foreign students will be charged according to NYU's tuition standard while Chinese students will pay less. But details are yet to be announced.
The university will also offer scholarship to underprivileged Chinese students, according to its Chinese partner ECNU.
Apart from NYU faculties, the school will also hire lecturers from around the world.
The Shanghai campus will use the same curriculum as NYU except for some courses required by the Ministry of Education for Chinese students. These Chinese courses will be taught by teachers from ECNU.
