Offbeat homework to spur student creativity
"THE Homework of China," an activity inspired by the televised singing competition "The Voice of China," was launched today by shedunews.com, a website of the Shanghai Education Commission, to discover talented children by assigning them interesting homework assignments.
"Student homework is now a synonym of endless written exercises," said Jin Zhiming, the website director. "Children are not interested in doing homework because it is boring."
Jin said they will invite celebrities and educators to make homework assignments for students that require scientific experiment, social survey and creative design, rather than writing a report or review.
"Many students waste the time surfing on the Internet or playing online games during summer vacation," Jin said. "And they make a desperate rush to finish their homework assignments before the new semester begins."
"We hope the special assignments made by celebrities and educators can arouse their interest and stimulate them to provide the best answers," Jin said.
China's basketball legend Yao Ming and popular writer Han Han have been invited to propose special assignments.
