Official: Migrant workers more competent than before

THE level of professional skills is improving among migrant workers, said the local labor department today when honoring this year's outstanding migrant workers.

A total of 390 migrant workers were awarded by the municipal government for their outstanding job performances.

Zhao Jiande, an official with the Shanghai Human Resources and Social Security Bureau, said 14 of these workers own patents and 68 percent of them hold skill certificates issued by national authorities.

"Compared with before, more workers honored this year possess vocational certificates and acquired advanced skills," Zhao said.

He added that about 50 migrant workers had been awarded a Shanghai hukou, or permanent residency permit, for their achievements. The permit entitles the workers to the same social welfare as enjoyed by local residents.
