Parents in dark as school relocates

A primary school in Baoshan District is being demolished and moved to a new site but the teachers, students and their parents, mostly migrants, have not even been told.

Baoshan's Gucun Town government yesterday ordered the Shouhu Primary School to notify all parents and teachers about the relocation within this week, following complaints from worried parents.

A man surnamed Zhao chanced upon the school being torn down while passing the site last week.

He was surprised and worried about the education of his two kids after the ongoing summer break. He contacted the teachers, only to find that they too had little idea about the sudden demolition.

The school was established about a decade ago and has about 1,100 students but it was taken over by the town government last year.

Having failed to enlarge the present campus, the town government then decided to demolish the school and relocate Shouhu into a much bigger public school, about 2 kilometers away.

Shouhu's principal surnamed Xu said he himself learnt about the closure decision two weeks ago by which time the summer vacation had already started and students had left the campus.
