Pay Is A Bit Too Short In Fashion Design

THE current economy isn't exactly tailor-made for fashion-design majors.

The starting salary of students from the fashion schools of Donghua University, famous for textile education, stands now at only 1,500 yuan (US$220) to 2,000 yuan per month.

Their predecessors used to get 3,000 to 5,000 yuan, school officials said yesterday.

Larger college enrollment and expansion of the industry have increased the competition for graduates, said Li Keling, director of the university's Fashion and Art Design Institute.

Nearly 400 domestic colleges now teach fashion design. When Donghua's fashion school set up shop in the 1980s, it was the only one.

Making things worse: Graduates don't like to leave Shanghai to look elsewhere for work.

"Students prefer to stay in the metropolis of Shanghai to receive the latest fashion ideas," Li said.
