SHANGHAI had a population of 18.88 million by the end of last year, according to the Shanghai Statistics Bureau.
About 166,600 babies were born and 115,500 people died in the city last year, putting the city's population-growth at 0.27 percent. The bureau also reported that 11 automobiles are owned, on average, by every 100 local families.
