Russian Congress opens in Shanghai
MORE than 1,000 Russian language experts from 48 countries, including the United States and Germany, gathered in Shanghai today to discuss the education of Russian language and literature.
They will stay in the city for five days to attend the 12th Russian Congress which began today.
This is the first time that the Russian Congress is held in an Asian country.
Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng attended the opening ceremony of the conference and gave a speech.
Russian learning began in China 300 years ago. As the two countries' diplomatic and economic ties grew in recent years, more and more people are studying Russian.
Currently, more than 120 Chinese universities and colleges are teaching Russian and the number of students studying the language has exceeded 25,000, according to official statistics.
