School's off for students stranded by college's license problem
HUNDREDS of students had to find alternative schooling after a college in Songjiang District announced yesterday it could not open due to "force majeure", a local Website reported today.
Shanghai Jinmao College was supposed to start military training today but now all it can do is return tuition fees and send students elsewhere, according to the Xinmin.cn report.
School investors couldn't get approval from education authorities in Hongkou District, where it is registered, to open a facility in any other district. Thus Songjiang District refused to grant it a license.
The college, on the second floor of a small building in Songjiang University Town, was converted from a foreign language school and restaurants during past months in readiness for the new school year.
Students and families who were hoping to set up in dormitories to start college life stayed in classrooms yesterday.
Students from more than 10 provinces registered for the school, some from as far away as Heilongjiang Province in northeastern China.
The college, which collected more than 700,000 yuan (US$102,465) from around 200 students, returned tuition fees to some families while others were still waiting for refunds last night.
