Schools on alert over snail fever

LOCAL primary and middle schools as well as universities have been told to keep a record of students who visit regions grappling with snail fever infection during their summer vacation after the new semester starts on September 1.

Migrant students who come from the infected areas to study in local schools also must be listed for early detection and prevention of snail fever, or schistosomiasis.

Under an order from the Ministry of Education, education authorities in 13 provinces and municipalities, including Shanghai, have been told to increase health awareness and sound a warning on snail fever, as students made up 50 percent of cases in recent years.

"Schools should hold lectures and give out pamphlets to students, talking about the harm and how to prevent the disease," Cong Haiying of the Shanghai Education Commission said.

Snail fever is a tropical disease caused by schistosomes or parasitic worms in the blood of human beings and mammals.
