Summer vacation ending with 14 drownings
FOURTEEN primary and secondary school students lost their lives in 12 drowning incidents in Shanghai during the summer vacation - the same number as last year - and education authorities are urging local schools to strengthen safety education in the new semester.
Drowning has been the top killer among minors for years and most drownings happen between June and late September every year.
The commission issued a public alert yesterday, urging local primary and secondary schools to take advantage of start-of-the-year home visits and parent meetings to push safety training.
The commission also called on neighborhoods and communities to improve warning signs near ponds and rivers and strengthen daily patrols near these locations.
Many of the drowned children were non-locals whose parents were at work.
