UN seeks translators from universities
THE United Nations will continue to hire freelancers and outsource loads of translation work to language universities to cope with a shortage of translators as the UN cut its operation budget this year, a senior UN official told a Shanghai conference yesterday.
Jean-Jacques Graisse, who heads the UN Department of General Assembly and Conference Management, said the UN will provide customized training for students majoring in translation and interpretation in 22 universities worldwide to prepare for competence tests.
The Shanghai conference gathered UN linguists and representatives of the 22 universities to discuss how to cultivate high-quality translators and interpreters through e-learning and virtual classes.
Every year, about 20 postgraduates from Shanghai International Studies University, one of the 22 universities, do internship in some UN organizations.
