Winner is chosen from 1,000 entering job-simulation contest
MA Lina from University of Shanghai for Science and Technology has beaten more than 1,000 undergraduates to take the first prize in a job seeking simulation contest held in Shanghai on Friday.
The state-owned human resources service company China International Intellectech Shanghai Corporation organized the contest to promote students’ employability with interview skills.
The event, which began in September, attracted students from numerous universities.
On Friday, the final 12 entered the last day of the contest after passing preliminary rounds involving self-introduction, a Q&A session, stress interview, group discussion, debate and an occupational personality test, all of which they are likely to face in a real job hunting process.
Human resource experts from renowned enterprises, such as portal website sohu.com and Citibank, were invited to be judges to give students the benefit of their experience and practical knowledge, such as what employers usually look for in interviews.
Liu Haolin was among two second-prize winners in the final. He is a senior student majoring in accounting at Shanghai International Studies University, said the contest had helped him get used to interview atmosphere and he was now more confident and calm in real job seeking situations.
“At a universities where most students are female, male students are usually not confident enough,” he said. “After nearly three months of competition, I’m now aware how huge this disadvantage is in interviews, especially in group discussions, when you should express yourself confidently. If you could not speak loudly and perform noticeably well, you may lose many opportunities.”
Fu Ye, who was joint 4th with five others, is a mechanical engineering major at Shanghai University. She said she had learnt via the contest that students really needed to prepare well to perform well in different kinds of interviews as each company only gave them one opportunity at each round.
Zhu Shibo, chief executive operator of a recruitment website of China International Intellectech Shanghai Corporation, said there were various ways of interviews to check comprehensive quality of applicants. She hoped students could overcome their fears and find their own resolutions in the contest to prepare themselves well for actual job seeking.
