Winners of Eastern Scholar award announced

SHANGHAI today named its top 56 scholars and teachers from home and abroad, awarding them scholarships to work for the city over the next three years.

Winners of the Eastern Scholar award cover fields in natural science, social science and medical research, and work as professors or guest professors at local colleges and research institutes.

Each will receive a total research and work subsidy of 400,000 yuan (US$58,600) to 600,000 yuan from the Shanghai Education Commission, of which 100,000 yuan is a personal allowance and the rest is dedicated to building research teams.

Meanwhile, employers provide housing, insurance, travel allowances and other help for the award winners.

Launched in late 2007, the Eastern Scholar aims to attract about 50 leading professionals from abroad each year to improve the city's higher education and scientific research.

Candidates can submit their application via the commission's Website (www.shmec.gov.cn) or from April at the new city educational and medical professional Website (www.shjwrc.gov.cn).

Meanwhile, the commission is also preparing an overseas training base in California, where elite Shanghai teachers can go for short-term study, research and exchange with their foreign counterparts.
