Women's group eyes flexible working

THE city government should promote and support flexible working by providing subsidies and information for job seekers, members of the top government advisory body said yesterday.

Shanghai Women's Federation put forward a proposal about providing flexible employment opportunities to university graduates, the unemployed in urban areas and rural migrant workers.

It says flexible working could be a way to stabilize the employment situation in the current economic downturn.

The service industry, with its high demand for employees, is considered a main force in attracting job seekers, according to the proposal.

To attract more laborers to become flexible employees, a subsidy system is proposed. It was suggested the government cover part of the employees' social insurance.

The women's federation also said that the Expo in Shanghai next year would be an opportunity to create more jobs for local residents.

It also called for the creation of community nurses at villages and communities.
