Young designers fashion poorly paid future

COLLEGE students who majored in fashion design are expected to have a hard time finding jobs.

The starting salary of students from the fashion school of Donghua University, famous for its textile education, only stands at 1,500 yuan (US$220) to 2,000 yuan a month, although their predecessors were offered 3,000 to 5,000 yuan, school officials said today.

Despite the harsh economic situation, the college's major expansion has increased the job competition for graduates.

Nearly 400 domestic colleges now teach fashion design, though only few did a decade ago, said Li Keling, director of the university's Fashion and Art Design Institute.

Moreover, graduates were not willing to leave Shanghai for non-local jobs, worsening their employment prospects.

University officials are trying to increase the enrollment, such as increasing cooperation with international schools and firms.

The university invited 200 fashion and design enterprises to take part in the graduate artwork display fair on Friday to let graduates have face-to-face meetings with potential employers.
