12 small pieces solve crime scene investigation
SCENES from the American television show "CSI" came to life in Pudong New Area when police solved a fatal hit-and-run traffic accident case based only on only 12 car fragments.
The suspect, surnamed Xu, turned himself in three days after the accident after getting calls from Pudong police.
Xu has been detained over the accident and has already lost his license to drive for life, police said yesterday.
The accident happened about 11pm on September 20. A 15-year-old bicyclist surnamed Meng was found dead on Chuanliu Road.
No witnesses or cameras were at the scene and police found only 12 small pieces of the suspect vehicle.
The fragments were from a headlight, bumper and a light-reflecting material.
The parts from the headlight and bumper identified the vehicle as a Honda CRV and the reflecting material narrowed the number of sold CRVs to 72 out of 3,360.
Police said they tracked down Xu, who had been in the area on September 20.
Xu initially ignored police calls but finally walked into a police station on September 23 and admitted the offense.
Xu said he was texting messages before he hit Meng.
