'Aftershock' draws flocks of viewers
DESPITE criticism over product placements in the film "Aftershock," the latest offering from mainland director Feng Xiaogang has drawn big crowds since its national release yesterday.
Shanghai United Cinema Lines, the city's major cinema chain, said that so far they have taken about 3.85 million yuan (US$566,000) in ticket sales from the film, which centers on the catastrophic 1976 Tangshan earthquake.
"The movie has a good emotional story and impressive visual effects, and will definitely be a box office sensation this summer," said Wu Hehu, the chain's deputy general manager.
Wu also expected the movie to top the weekend box office and predicted his chain would take more than 20 million yuan from it.
Nationally the film has grossed over 33 million yuan, a record performance for a domestic production on its first screening day.
The film is also the first Chinese film to be digitally re-mastered into the IMAX format.
