Book festival proves to be true best-seller
THE city's annual book fair was wrapped up yesterday, with both sales and visitors increasing from last year.
More than 240,000 people - about 20,000 more than last year - visited the week-long Sixth Shanghai Book Fair.
The fair's organizer, the Shanghai Press and Publication Bureau, said 28 million yuan (US$4.09 million) was spent on books in the main fair at the Shanghai Exhibition Center, 2 million yuan more than last year.
An additional 10 million yuan came from extended fairs, including at larger book stores and online stores.
With the theme of "I Love Reading, I Love Life," the fair featured about 470 publishers from all over the country showing more than 100,000 books, including 60,000-plus new titles.
It was the first time digital checking systems were used at the fair, so information on all books was easily accessible.
"It was the biggest book fair so far in the city," said Jiao Yang, head of the press and publication bureau.
"It inspired people's passion for reading and we also try to make reading a part of everyone's life," she said.
Many noted writers, politicians, actors and athletes attended about 370 activities associated with the book fair.
Among them was Wu Jianmin, the former ambassador to France and former chairman of the Bureau of International Expositions, who shared his World Expo experiences while presenting his book "My Fate with Expo."
Lu Ping, the former director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office of the State Council, presented his book, "Lu Ping's Dictation about the Return of Hong Kong."
Foreign writers from many walks of life promoted their books, including Cherie Blair, wife of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, and renowned Japanese author Watanabe Junichi.
