Celebration of Bard’s life takes center stage in city
SOME of the English language’s greatest plays will be staged in Shanghai for the first time this week.
The celebrated Royal Shakespeare Company’s epic play “Henry IV, Part I” will raise the curtain for the “Shakespeare 400 Season” tonight at the Shanghai Grand Theatre.
Tickets for the hotly anticipated show sold out three months ago, and Shakespeare lovers also snapped up tickets for the renowned company’s other performances being staged in the city this week — “Henry IV, Part II” and “Henry V.”
Starring Antony Sher and Alex Hassell and directed by Gregory Doran, the performances will feature lavish period sets and more than 300 exquisite costumes.
The Shakespeare 400 Season, hosted by Shanghai Grand Theatre and Shanghai United Media Group, will run for an entire year to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the playwright’s death.
Over the course of the year, more than 10 Bard-themed performances and other activities will be put on for local Shakespeare enthusiasts.
Highlights of the season include the play “Hamlet” performed by National Theater Live, “Romeo and Juliet” performed by Mariinsky Ballet, and the romantic concert “Shakespeare in Love.”
Workshops, bazaars, art lessons for young people, and lectures will also be organized to help local people get better acquainted with The Bard.
“Shakespeare’s well-known plays are also familiar to people in China,” said Jessie Song, a local administrative worker and fan of The Bard.
“Many touching stories such as ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and ‘Hamlet’ offer in-depth depictions of humanity and have universal appeal. It is a good opportunity for us to appreciate the authentic flavor and charm of Shakespeare’s plays.”
