City attracts 1.79m tourists in first three days of holiday
SOME 1.79 million tourists came to Shanghai in the first three days of the week-long Spring Festival holiday, up 8.5 percent on last year, according to the local tourism watchdog.
Many city attractions saw big increases in visit numbers, said the Shanghai Tourism Administration.
Between January 31 and February 2, Yuyuan Garden attracted some 1.4 million visits, a year-on-year rise of 27 percent. Meanwhile, numbers going to Zhaojialou, an ancient water town in Pujiang, Minhang District, jumped 30 percent year-on-year to 106,300.
Other popular tourist attractions such as Jinjiang Amusement Park, Happy Valley and Guyi Garden in Jiading District all registered more than 30,000 visits — notable increases from a year earlier.
Nanjing Road Pedestrian area, the Bund and Xujiahui — the city’s major commercial and tourism areas — attracted 4.2 million, 1.75 million and 2.4 million visits respectively during the three-day period, the administration said.
Citywide, the number of visits to the 120 major tourist sites tracked by the administration — which include the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, the Shanghai Wild Animal Park, Century Park and the Shanghai World Financial Center — totaled 1.63 million during the first three days of the holiday, a like-for-like jump of 42 percent, the watchdog said.
Shanghai saw a significant increase in numbers of visitors from other parts of the country during the three-day period. Factors behind this trend are thought to include improved intercity travel and the waiving of highway tolls during the holiday.
Occupancy rates at the city’s main hotels and guest houses for tourists averaged 32 percent between January 31 and February 2 — a like-for-like increase of 10 percent, the administration said.
The Shanghai Tourism Distribution Center dispatched 215 buses to tourist attractions in both outlying districts of Shanghai and scenic spots in neighboring cities during the first three days of the week-long Spring Festival, the administration added.
