Creative businesses on rise in Shanghai

CREATIVE and cultural industries in the city produced 769.5 billion yuan (US$124.1 billion) in goods and services in 2012, a yearly increase of 11.3 percent, according to a report released last week by the municipal government and Shanghai Statistics Bureau.

The sector represented 11.29 percent of Shanghai's GDP in 2012, according to Yang Li, vice bureau chief at the statistics bureau. It employed about 1.3 million people in the city last year.

The output of some creative businesses grew faster than the overall sector, with performing arts increasing 15.4 percent, architectural design growing at 15.3 percent and industrial design rising by 11.8 percent.

The city will continue to welcome creative consultant service companies and help support trade fairs and exhibitions, officials said. Most of the top creative consultant agencies in the world have representatives in Shanghai, making it a hub for such services, they said.

"Shanghai has become the city with the biggest fair exhibition space in China, and the city holds such exhibitions with greater frequency than anywhere else in the country," said Li Yaoxin, the vice director of the city's culture and creativity industry section.
