EELS slip away without playing
ALTERNATIVE rock band EELS left 700 fans disappointed when they canceled a sold-out show at the city's Mao Livehouse, after their equipment failed to arrive.
The crowd received refunds as they left the Chongqing Road S. venue early Wednesday morning, Li Dalong, owner of Mao, confirmed.
The American band, who released their debut album in 1996, are led by Mark Oliver Everett - better known as E.
The Mao Livehouse show began at 9:10pm with French opening act Nouvelle Vague. Both bands had traveled to Shanghai from the Kama Love Music Festival in Beijing.
Following their set, about 10:15pm, an announcement was projected on the stage that read in Chinese, "EELS will perform tonight after midnight."
However, after midnight an announcement was made that the show was canceled.
"Their equipment finally arrived the next day. The delay was due to transport problems," said Li.
The band have left Shanghai to continue a world tour.
