Electronic reading rooms to flourish in Pudong
THE city will open 20 E-reading rooms in Pudong next year in a national trial to promote digital reading in nine cities.
Pudong is responsible for providing digital content, including e-books, e-journals, audiobooks and videos for the 20 rooms.
The 20 E-reading rooms will be set up in the Yanlord Community, Zhangjiang-High Tech Park, rural neighborhoods, schools for migrant kids, and apartment buildings for migrant workers and young professionals.
Pudong government will invest 2.8 million yuan (US$420,553) to establish these reading rooms, each equipped with six computers with a 500GB hard drive and a Wi-Fi router so that people can access the Internet with their own computers.
Also today, the Pudong District Library held an opening ceremony. Located at 88 Qiancheng Road, the library is the biggest in Shanghai with a floor space of 60,885 square meters. It has 2 million copies of books and 3,000 seats.
No cards are required to read books and journals in its reading room. But to borrow books, people need to obtain a library card by showing their identity cards or passports and pay 80 yuan in deposit.
