Evening Expo boat trips return

SIGHTSEERS can take an evening boat trip past the World Expo site and see its attractions illuminated against the night sky.

The 90-minute trip along the Huangpu River was previously offered during the World Expo 2010 and it's being run again on a trial basis, said the city river tour association.

Hu Min, deputy secretary of the association, said there is an onboard catering service, the first of its kind among city ship tours.

Passengers embark at Shiliupu Port, the major passenger port in downtown Huangpu District, and sail to the China Pavilion and the Expo Cultural Center. On the way back, they will get a perfect view of Pudong's spectacular high-rises and the Bund area on the other bank, said the authority. The 188 yuan (US$29) price includes a meal, said the operator, Shanghai Qiangsheng Cruise Co.

During the six-month Expo, which ended on October 31, tour boarding areas, or "water gates," alongside the Huangpu River were opened so visitors could leave the site on sightseeing ships late at night. They handled more than 10,000 visitors a day.

Shanghai has 37 tour ships in operation which carry between 3 million and 3.5 million tourist a year on average.
