Fans still turn out for latest Potter film

THOUGH local film insiders believe "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" won't surpass "Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen," it still has proved to be a hit at the Shanghai box office over its opening weekend.

According to Shanghai United Cinema Lines, the city's largest cinema chain, the sixth installment in the Harry Potter saga has already earned more than 10 million yuan (US$1.5 million) since it opened on Wednesday.

"The movie with dazzling stunts and an attractive story line is expected to make at least 30 million yuan at our chain," said Wu Hehu, deputy director of the chain.

So far, Yonghua Cinema has earned about 1 million yuan from the "Half-Blood Prince."

"The film appeals to a large fan base of JK Rowling's original books," said an official from the theater surnamed Zhou. "Many children and teenagers are growing up with the films. They can't miss it."

Ticket sales in the Stellar Cinema City have totaled about 600,000 yuan, which is considered good considering the movie faced strong competition from "Revenge of the Fallen."

"Revenge of the Fallen" has already grossed more than 60 million yuan at local cinema chains. And its national box-office revenue has exceeded 400 million yuan, the most ever on the mainland.
