Fest to flood screens with 300 films

LOCAL movie buffs will be offered about 300 acclaimed foreign and domestic films next month at 30 or so local theaters at the 13th Shanghai International Film Festival.

A record 2,327 entries from 81 countries and regions of the world have registered to compete for the "Jin Jue" (Golden Goblet) Award, organizers said yesterday. The festival runs from June 12 to June 20.

The seven-member jury panel will be chaired by notable Hollywood-based Chinese director John Woo. He'll join such acting and directing celebrities as Chen Kaige and Feng Xiaogang on the red carpet.

A highlight will be a retrospective of works by celebrated American movie director Woody Allen.

In addition, the 16th Shanghai Television Festival will take place June 7 to June 11.

An important part of the TV festival will be the Magnolia International Documentary Awards, which gives young directors a rare opportunity to receive funding and learn from top documentary film makers in master classes.
