Ghosts, goblins and monsters invade an abandoned warehouse
SHANGHAI Nightmare, a haunted house, opened on Friday and will try to scare the wits out of people until Halloween on October 31. The haunted house is in an abandoned warehouse on Xinzha Road near Suzhou Creek.
Zhang Junxian is one of the "zombies" trying his best to frighten visitors. He has a lot of experience as he also worked at the haunted house when it was open last year.
"I love the part-time job as I can see all the expressions and reactions from various people when they confront 'evil,'" said Zhang, 20, who is a maintenance worker on Metro Line 8 during the day.
But at night, he puts on his black cloak and zombie mask, wandering the corridors of the haunted house.
Zhang is one of 44 actors in the haunted house who dress up as various ghosts and monsters. Some of the characters are taken from horror films such as "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and the Japanese movie "Ring."
Zhang said most of the girls will scream, but some men pretend to be indifferent to establish their "bravery" although they are often so shocked that they can't speak.
Zhang uses his deep voice to terrify visitors. He walks swiftly without making a sound, and waits patiently for visitors to relax before jumping out and issuing a blood-curdling scream.
"You can't just jump out and yell as people will think it's a joke," Zhang said.
In one case, a young girl was so scared that she shouted to staff workers for help and asked to be let out before finishing the tour, Zhang said.
Other times, things can backfire on the ghosts.
Zhang said he got hit in the face by a man when he scared him.
"Fortunately, my mask was made of soft plastic so it didn't hurt much," Zhang said.
