Gillian Chung makes brave return to the spotlight
HONG Kong singer and actress Gillian Chung said on Thursday that it was time for her to stand up, when she made her first public appearance in Shanghai since the Edison Chen photo scandal last January.
Chung was in town to promote a video game, but most questions she faced at the game's press conference were about the scandal - when explicit photos of Hong Kong star Chen together with many starlets, including Chung, Bobo Chan and Cecilia -Cheung, were leaked to the Internet.
She appeared nervous and cautious in front of the media, as she did two weeks ago when she made her first public appearance since the scandal.
"I don't consider myself weak. I've been through many downturns, so it's time for me to stand up now."
The photos destroyed the healthy public image of Twins, her Cantopop duo with Charlene Choi.
Her immediate response and apology - saying she was "too naive and silly" at the time - did not appease the public and she withdrew from public life for about a year.
Two weeks ago she made an appearance on popular Hong Kong talk show "Be My Guest," in which she apologized again for her involvement in the scandal, claimed she attempted suicide and said she would resume work to support her family.
Two days earlier Cecilia Cheung, who was married when she got caught up in the scandal, appeared in a similar talk show.
A wife and mother now, Cheung was more forthright, blaming Chen for being irresponsible, and thanking her husband, singer Nicholas Tse.
