Historic buildings in Bund area will be shops, recreation center
A historic market in the Bund area will form part of a new mall for shopping and recreation, with other historic buildings in the area also to be preserved.
The renovation started over the weekend on the Central Mall and some nearby buildings on the Nanjing Road E. that will reopen to the public as the "Bund Central" in 2016.
The renovation site is the location of a longtime market that became a popular place for sales and repair of electronic appliances for decades.
"After the renovation, the building will become a shopping mall to be home to flagship stores of popular clothes brands," said Zhou Haiying, chairman of the Shanghai Bund Investment (Group) Co Ltd, the government-backed developer of the Bund Financial Zone. The company is the developer of the multi-billion-yuan landmark project.
The neo-classical, European style Central Mall building, which dates from the 1930s, and many of its historic features will be preserved, Zhou said. An old mailbox of the mall, for instance, will be exhibited in the area.
The five-story mall covering about 6,000 square meters was closed in 2006 along with nearby historic buildings for new planning and design.
The six nearby buildings that were built in the era of the 1920s and also will be restored as cultural and recreational venues, Zhou said.
Just one block from the Bund waterfront, the mixed-use development will features high-end shops, fine dining, performing arts venues as well as a boutique hotel.
"As we renovate these historical buildings into a first-class destination for commerce, leisure, culture and art, we hope to preserve the heritage of the Bund, all while promoting and celebrating today's lifestyle," Zhou said. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on Friday night.
