Home of Laszlo Hudec opened to visitors
CULTURE lovers can pay homage to the city's most legendary architect Laszlo Hudec today as his former residence in Changning District has been renovated and opened to the public.
The Hungarian architect who came to Shanghai as a World War I refugee designed and built the English country-style villa on Panyu Road in 1931 and spent the next six years living there. Later the building became part of a tourism school.
Architects from Shanghai Tongji University took part in the villa's restoration last June, basing their work on archived records and photographs.
After months of hard work, the Hudec Memorial Museum opened its door today and visitors can look at the famous architect's personal belongings and photographs, the Oriental Morning Post reported.
Old Shanghai saw its heyday in the 1920s and '30s when diverse classical, modern and Art Deco buildings mushroomed in the foreign concessions, including such landmarks as the Park Hotel, the Grand Threater and the Moore Memorial Church designed by Hudec. Most of his pieces are now listed as heritages for protection.
