Hooper recounts Hollywood journey

Golden Goblet Award jury president Tom Hooper yesterday recounted his journey to success in Hollywood at the last forum at this year's Shanghai International Film Festival.

The acclaimed director said that "The King's Speech" was his third production and he struggled to convince people that it had the potential to make it big.

He said in the beginning no one expected it to be successful. Many Hollywood studios as well as stars had turned it down because they felt it wasn't a good investment choice.

"As a filmmaker, you can't even ignore the business side of it," Hooper said.

But when he was traveling with the film in different countries for screenings, the emotion people felt at the end of the film affected him greatly.

After "The King's Speech" he went on to make "Les Miserables," which was a different genre altogether and already tasted success.

"I think it would be a mistake to try to do it again with a very similar subject and expect lightening to strike twice," Hooper told the audience yesterday.
