Lots to do in city during National Day holiday

There’s lots to do in Shanghai during the upcoming seven-day National Day holiday, with parks and scenic spots across the city presenting a raft of activities from flower exhibitions and music concerts to magic shows and seafood festivals.

The Chenshan Botanic Garden in Songjiang District will host 14 concerts from October 1-7. Visitors will sit on the grass amid exotic flowers and rare plants from across the globe and enjoy beautiful music.

Musical troupes, mainly comprised of teenagers and youngsters, will present classical, marimba, electronic and folk music, as well as sizhu (string instruments and bamboo flute) music and pingtan (an art combining storytelling and ballad singing in Suzhou dialect) and dance.

There will be two concerts daily, each lasting one hour, and they are designed especially for parents and their children.

Happy Valley will host a magic festival during the holiday. Twenty magicians from 12 countries will present magic extravaganzas. Tourists also will have the chance to learn how to perform magic.

An autumn flower exhibition will start at the Shanghai Botanical Garden on Friday. The holiday is the best time to appreciate chrysanthemums and sweet-scented osmanthus that are in full bloom. Some of the other flowers and plants are cosmos, common zinnia, spider flowers and sunflowers. They will be arranged into beautiful shapes by gardeners.

The China Maritime Museum in the Pudong New Area will invite tourists to make paper models of ships and learn paper-cutting from artisans, while photo, painting and paper-cutting exhibitions will be held at the Tianzifang Art Center during the holiday.

The Yuehu Sculpture Park in Sheshan Hills of Songjiang District will host a pet festival, and pet owners can bring their pets to compete on the stage in a pet "talent show" competition.

The Rose Park in Pujiang Town will present a rose exhibition, while the Kuiyuan Park invites tourists to enjoy more than 20 hectares of sunflowers and play with straw men.

A fishing festival in Huating Town in Jiading District, a bonfire festival at the Sanmin Village on Chongming Island, a seafood festival in Jinshan District and a kite-flying festival at Haiwan National Forest Park in Fengxian District will also provide a lot of fun during the holiday.
