Mendelssohn celebrations

SHANGHAI audiences can celebrate the 200th birthday of composer Felix Mendelssohn when composer Riccardo Chailly conducts the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra on October 21 and 22 at Shanghai Grand Theater.

Riccardo Chailley, 56, will present Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 5, known as the Reformation, and Mahler's First Symphony. His visit to Shanghai in 1996 with Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam was considered one of the highlights of the Chinese artistic calendar.

And the spirit of Spanish gipsy music comes to Shanghai Concert Hall this Sunday with a recital by world-renowned flamenco guitarist Pepe Romero, 65, scion of a famous musical family. His performance starts at 7:30pm.
