New life at old shipyard

AN old shipyard and an area along the Huangpu River near Lujiazui in Pudong New Area have been turned into a major sightseeing area and entertainment complex.

The renovation includes the former site of the 148-year-old Shanghai Shipyard, which was relocated to Chongming Island in 2005.

The riverside area, which stretches 1,000 meters, will feature a dock along with high-end restaurants and clubs.

The developer is currently trying to attract merchants for the riverside area.

It's just one of Pudong's efforts to increase retail and entertainment facilities by 2015.

"Pudong suffers a severely imbalanced distribution of commercial facilities, most of which are in the Lujiazui area," said Chen Zhongmao, deputy director of Pudong New Area Commission of Commerce.

Many residents in Pudong have long complained about shopping inconvenience and companies in Pudong worry about attracting professionals without supporting facilities.

The government plans to add more retail facilities along the riverside, Century Avenue, as well as in communities and industrial parks.
