Old town beckons visitors with cane shoots

SHANGHAI residents can experience the joy of crop harvest during a cane shoots festival that will open this Friday in the centuries-old Liantang Town in suburban Qingpu District.
They can learn agricultural production in the farms and help farmers harvest cane shoots, taros and green soy beans, said Dong Yongyuan, head of the town.
In addition, they can taste local snacks and watch folk opera during the festival that ends on Monday, Dong said.
Liantang Town is famous for its savory cane shoots. The town produces more than 50,000 tons of cane shoots each year.
