Online platform for local news
Soon after its launch, the Shanghai United Media Group announced the signing of a strategic agreement with Baidu Inc, China’s largest Internet search engine operator, to jointly operate an online platform for Shanghai news.
There are plans for more strategic cooperation in the future involving local news search engine, media resources purchase, cloud server provision, public sentiment report, personnel cooperation and strategic resource purchase, the two parties said during the signing ceremony, without providing details.
The joint project is seen as the first step by the new SUM Group to embrace new technology following the rise of new media.
“The project will incorporate search-engine technology to optimize reader experience as the new group seeks to explore the convergence of traditional media and new media,” said SUMG Publisher Qiu Xin.
Zhu Guang, vice-president of Baidu, said the launch of Baidu News Shanghai Channel will provide a window for users to understand the rapidly changing city.
“The cooperation will bring together a wealth of news resources from SUMG and Baidu’s advantages in technology and platform,” Zhu added.
