Plans for school's restoration released

TONGJI University architects yesterday showed Shanghai Daily the design plans to restore the former St Mary's School, where Chinese writer Eileen Chang was educated.

The appearance of the old buildings together with its sheltered walkways, playground and lawns will be restored to their original appearance. The school was built 128 year ago.

"I have tried to keep the atmosphere of the school to preserve the historical memory of the city," said Huang Yiru, chief designer and professor of architecture at Tongji University.

But the school's inner spaces will be turned into cafes and boutique stores to match the future surrounding offices and retail buildings.
