Pudong cooks up a cultural feast for locals

HUNDREDS of activities were held in Pudong on March 23 to mark the Cultural Service Day and the start of the first Shanghai Citizens Cultural Festival that runs through the end of this year.

Performances, art shows and other activities were held in 203 community centers and 70 public venues in Pudong. More than 30 community cultural centers extended their hours to let residents enjoy colorful programs.

In the town of Gaoqiao, craftsmen showed their embroidery; collectors displayed their art treasures; gardeners brought out bonsai masterpieces; painters and calligraphers demonstrated their skills in public; and local residents performed Tai Chi, ballroom dances and Chinese operas.

In the Central Green of Lujiazui, tea ceremony and jazz dance attracted many white-collars. Young volunteers were teaching out-of-town tourists Shanghai dialect. Workers from about 70 financial institutes and companies in Lujiazui had a party to share experiences on food, charity and culture.

Pudong authorities will organize more than 4,500 cultural activities for the Shanghai Citizens Cultural Festival and expect to attract 5.5 million participants.
