Refunds offered on Nice bookings

TRAVEL agencies are offering refunds to local tourists for bookings made to Nice in southern France after a truck attack killed at least 84 people on Thursday.

There are no reports of any casualties of local tourists.

A 16-member tour group from Shanghai, Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces was in Nice yesterday. They reached the city on Wednesday.

“We heard screaming ambulance sirens outside, and soon realized something big had happened after the hotel’s front desk made calls to rooms to confirm the safety of the guests,” said Xie Dong, the tour leader of the group, which was organized by online operator Ctrip.

The calls came at midnight when some of them were sleeping, or about to sleep after watching the fireworks, Xie said, adding that they lived in a downtown hotel.

“There are few pedestrians outside today,” she said, as the tour group got ready to leave Nice.

Ctrip has offered refunds for bookings made for accommodations in Nice between today and July 21. It said it would adjust the itineraries for tour groups who want to visit the port city depending on the situation and safety concerns.

Ctrip warned tourists to avoid areas with big crowds and follow the tour guides.

Tongcheng, another online travel operator, said tourists who had booked tour packages to Nice between today and July 22 can have a free change of schedule, or can get a refund if they want to cancel the trip.

Elong and Qunar also offered refunds for their customs for air ticket and accommodation for the next seven days.

France was once the most popular European destination for Chinese tourists because of its vineyards, delicacies and cultural heritage, but a terror attack in Paris in November last year that killed more than 150 people killed the enthusiasm, according to Mafengwo, a travel website.

The European Championships revived tourism again, but the incident in Nice would mean another heavy blow to the French tourism industry which was just making a slow recovery, said Feng Rao, a tourism trend analyst with the website.
