Scores of museums open for free today

MORE than 100 museums and memorial halls in the city will offer free admission today and tomorrow to celebrate International Museum Day, which is today.

Zhu Xiaobo, vice director of the Shanghai Administration of Culture, Radio, Broadcasting, Film and Television, said 30 museums will participate in Museum Night and remain open until 9pm today.

Museum Night was first launched in France in 2005 and Zhu said "extending the hours of museums will allow more people a chance to visit for free."

About 100,000 bilingual guide maps will be handed out free today at 115 museums in the city including Shanghai Museum and Shanghai Science and Technology Museum.

Shanghai Museum was established in 1952 and boasts a collection of about 1 million pieces ranging from bronzes and ink-wash paintings to sculptures and ceramics.

Today marks the beginning of an online vote for the Best of Shanghai Museum Collection.
