Sculpture of Uzbek poet Navoiy unveiled at Shanghai University

A 3.6-METER-HIGH sculpture of Alisher Navoiy, an Uzbek poet who lived more than 500 years ago, was unveiled at Shanghai University to mark the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relation between China and Uzbekistan.

The late Uzbek president Islam Karimov had intended to send the bronze sculpture, weighing 3 tons, as a gift to China.

The sculpture was designed by the late Uzbek sculptor Ravshan Mirtadjiev and completed by Chinese sculptor Ye Qing. It now stands at the university on a 1.8m high base.

Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, and Shanghai, became sister cities in 1994. Shanghai University set up the Center for Uzbekistan Studies in 2013.
