Shanghai Acrobatic Troupe starts European tour with first show made for foreign market

PERFORMERS from Shanghai Acrobatic Troupe yesterday embarked on their four-month tour performing "12 Zodiacs" in Europe.

The original acrobatic show will have its premiere on November 14 at the famous moving theater the Big Top of Phoenix Circus in Paris. It will raise the curtain for the show's 100 tour performances in European countries including France, Belgium and Switzerland.

It is also the first tailor-made show of the troupe for a foreign market.

According to Yu Yigang, director of the Shanghai Acrobatic Troupe, classic Chinese acrobatic acts will be included in the show to depict various personalities of the 12 symbolic zodiac animals.

"For instance, the 'big springboard' stunt will portray the strength and energy of the tiger while the mischievous rat will be depicted through clowning," Yu said. "It is a good chance for Western people to have a deep understanding of Chinese zodiac signs, an important part of Chinese culture."

The show is a collaboration between the troupe and the French performing company Phoenix Circus. Professionals of the company will offer suggestions in music, costumes and choreography to help the show cater to Western tastes.

Industry insiders anticipated that it will launch new and innovative creations and marketing of acrobatics in China. The art form has existed in China for more than 2,000 years.

After the tour, the show will be developed into a cultural brand of the city with frequent performances and a series of related efforts.
