Shanghai Oriental Art Center to launch 2017 festival

SHANGHAI Oriental Art Center's 2017 festival of classics, modern and experimental productions will run from March 17 to April 29.

Held in its tenth year, the festival will present a total of 23 performances covering varied styles including Peking, Kunqu, Yueju, Huangmei, Pingtan and Shanghai farce.

Artists of major traditional theaters of the country will gather to perform and give art workshops to young theater fans.

Yueju Opera artist Mao Weitao's new avant-grade Yueju Opera play "Coriolanus and Du Liniang" will open the festival. The play produced by the Little Hundred Flowers Yueju Troupe of Zhejiang Province is an experimental story of Roman soldier Coriolanus and Du Liniang, a famous character from "The Peony Pavilion."

Zhang Jun, who was honored as a UNESCO Artist for Peace in 2011 will stage an updated version of the original Kunqu Opera "Blossoms on a Spring Moonlit Night.

“Peking Opera performer Wang Peiyu will bring an innovative multi-media show "The Map" which features crossover elements of Peking Opera, crosstalk and storytelling.

Guoguang Opera Company from Taiwan will stage two newly-adapted shows "The Golden Cangue" and "Wang Xifeng's Farce in Ningguo Mansion."
