Shanghai elderly travel the most among peers as aged mainlanders on average travel 4 times last year: report
THE mainland elderly tourists on average spend about 4,000 yuan (US$615) for a single purchased tour, and the Shanghainese elderly are the most active among their peers in making travels, a report on the 2016 elderly’s travel market in the Chinese mainland by leading online travel operator Ctrip revealed.
More of the elderly tourists are now pursuing comfortable trips with better catering and accommodation instead of highlighting low price tours, which used to be favored by mainland seniors for a long time, Ctrip said. On average, this elderly group traveled four times per person last year, and the number of elderly travelers have accounted for more than 20 percent of Chinese tourists of all age groups.
South Korea, Japan, Thailand, Russia, Singapore, the United States and Malaysia are the most popular overseas destinations for the elderly mainland tourists, those who are aged above 55, according to the report.
They prefer traveling to Japan and South Korea via cruise ships, while the tourist city of Sanya on tropical Hainan Island, Beijing and Jiuzhaigou Valley are the top 3 popular domestic destinations for them, the report said.
They prefer traveling in spring, September and late October to avoid the travel peak, it said.
