Talent winner 'plagiarized dance moves'
LOCAL street dancers and their fans have accused the body popping winner of the "China's Got Talent" competition of plagiarism.
Zhuo Jun's performance on Sunday's final at the Shanghai Stadium, entitled "The Fantasy Rhapsody," copied ideas from some Western dancers, according to contributors to online forums.
A netizen posted clips of dancing group Matched and a Robert Roldan's show in Episode 20 of "So You Think You Can Dance Season Seven."
The web user said these were very similar to Zhuo's routine.
Zhuo's show even used the same music as the original ones, netizen "Olive Lau" said in a post on baidu.com.
"I don't blame Zhuo. He is just a kid who loves dancing. I think the dance was devised by the program team who should be held responsible for this," said the netizen.
"The show seemed to fool most of the audience who might not be familiar with street dance, but not the real fans of street dance."
The talent show's producer admitted yesterday that Zhuo's dance in the final did borrow some moves from other artists but denied plagiarism.
"Zhuo's dance was designed by a professional choreographer," said Lu Wei, a spokesman for the show.
Lu appealed to the public to be tolerant. "Every competitor here has a dream and our job is to find the most promising one and help him or her make the dream come true," Lu said.
"Zhuo only began dancing two years ago, and we shouldn't expect too much of him."
Zhuo's victory would probably encourage more young people to take up street dancing, Lu said.
However, Liu Lei, a dancer with Caster Crew, a famous street dancing team in China, was not convinced.
"There's a worry that fans might not know what real street dance is and why we dance," said Liu.
