Theater academy opens winter camp for foreign students

WINTER Institute 2013, an international exchange program held by Shanghai Theater Academy and sponsored by world's top universities Brown, Duke, NYU and Yale, opened today.
It's the second year of the Winter Institute after its successful launch in 2012. Traditional Chinese drama has been added to the curriculum under the requests of many students.
"I remember that when I was in college and told others I was interested in Chinese theater, everyone looked puzzled. I found the situation has totally changed when I tell people my PhD major is Chinese theater. Things are happening in China and things are happening in Chinese theater," said Tarryn Chun, a PhD student from Harvard University.
During the 11-day Winter Institute, Chun and other 140 or so students, including 30-40 auditors, will attend lectures, seminars and workshops on the art of Peking Opera and Yueju Opera, multimedia performance, rural literature and urban culture.
"Compared with last year's program, the number of students has doubled this year. More than 20 of them are international students," said Zong Yu, a faculty member in charge of the Winter Institute.
There is strong interest in traditional Chinese drama as more than 40 students have applied to take the course, Zong said.
The students will visit the water town of Zhujiajiao this Saturday to watch the night show of "Water Heavens" by Tan Dun, a famous Chinese composer and Grammy-award winner.
