Vacation reading class becomes a bestseller
A READING class organized by a local bookstore has proved popular with parents wondering what to do with their children when the winter vacation starts on Friday.
Registration began last month and all 60 places are filled, said Zhu Bing, a manager at the Bookuu Bookstore on Yishan Road in Xuhui District.
Zhu said the store came up with the idea after hearing working couples’ worries about what their children would be doing during holidays.
The class runs from 9am to 5:30pm, from January 20 to 30. Children can stay with teachers until 8:30pm if their parents work late. The class costs 80 yuan (US$13) per day, including lunch.
Zhu said six teachers are hired to help the children with reading and school homework. They also provide extracurricular activities such as drawing, calligraphy and playing table tennis.
“We think children are safer at the reading class than reading alone in the bookstore,” Zhu said. “And they will be given books suitable for their age rather than picking up books for adults.”
But Zhu said the bookstore won’t drive away children who want to read but don’t attend the class.
Only children from grades one to three and who live nearby were eligible due to limited space.
Sending children to grandparents’ homes, cram schools and various education centers are the most common choices for working couples during vacations.
A mother surnamed Bai said she sent her daughter to an education center in Xujiahui during vacations.
She was happy to pay 8,000 yuan (US$1,324) fee for two months as the center also offered activities such as swimming.
“Learning centers are very good as children can play with other kids, something grandparents cannot give.”
