'Very Ordinary Couple' picks up big Asian award

SOUTH Korean director Roh Doek's "Very Ordinary Couple" won best feature film in the Asian New Talent Award category yesterday at the 16th Shanghai International Film Festival.
Last night's award ceremony also recognized Wong Chen-hsi from Singapore as best director for her film "Innocents" and Chinese director Liu Juan received the jury prix award for the film "Singing When We Are Young."
Roh graduated from the Department of Film at the Seoul Institute of the Arts. This film was her debut feature film.
"This film is a subtle, sensitive and truthful portrait of life and people. It is well-made with confidence and professional directing skills. Through the very special eyes of the filmmaker, we as audience, gradually walk into the story and are amazed by the subtle beauty that we have ignored in daily life," the jury wrote about "Very Ordinary Couple."
The film tells the story of a young couple's office romance and how they change over time.
"It took us a long time to finish this film, winning this award is unexpected," Roh said. "'Very Ordinary Couple' was a film about love.
"For my next project I may try something different," she said.
