Voters pick best of city lights
HUAIHAI Road M., the Lujiazui Area and Nanjing Road E. lead the list of Shanghai's best night scenes, the Shanghai Tourism Administration said yesterday.
The tourism agency assembled the city's first official Top 10 ranking of night-time scenery, based on a poll of residents and the opinions of a panel of visual-art experts.
But impressive as Shanghai's sights might be, they still lag behind the nightly displays in cities in more advanced countries, the experts and officials said.
Many times, Shanghai's night scenery betrays a lack of overall planning. And some night landscapes are energy wasting, the experts and officials said.
"We have a long way to go, whether it's using new-type light sources, or in light designing," said Zhang Mode, an official with the administration.
"We expect the night sceneries could be more creative and involve more high-tech elements."
Around 10,000 votes were collected from residents in the three-month selection process.
City scenes were judged on how well they combined light and shade, and for environmental and energy-saving qualities, officials said.
The experts and residents sometimes disagreed.
Many residents preferred Yuyuan Garden Mall, while experts said the design of the light there - it follows the outlines of the building - was out of date.
Almost all the experts voted for the Suzhou Creek Bank in Putuo District, though the newly developed site is not well known to the general public. The experts praised the "poet-like" harmony between lights and the creek.
