Zhou to take 'clean talk' comic show to Australia
LOCAL stand-up comedian Zhou Libo will bring his "Shanghai-Style Clean Talk" comedy show to Australia for a pair of live performances in June.
Zhou will stage shows at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Center and the Sydney Entertainment Center on June 17 and 22, catering to the 200,000 or so Shanghainese living in Australia's two largest cities.
The comedian said his team is contacting agencies in Europe, Canada and the United States to turn this into a world tour.
"The two shows in June will still focus on the tremendous changes China and Shanghai have undergone over the past three decades," Zhou said. "As to many Chinese Australians who have been away from their hometown for a long time, it will be a performance full of heartwarming, nostalgic and impressive memories."
Before each show begins, he will take opinions from the audience on whether to present it in Shanghai dialect or Mandarin. He has even prepared some episodes in English.
Since the debut of Zhou's "Shanghai-Style Clean Talk" at the end of 2006, the unique comedy performances have drawn over 200 million yuan (US$31.6 million) at the box office in China, attracting around 500,000 people.
Although tickets are priced high - about 800 yuan for the shows in Australia - Zhou said he seeks more than just commercial profit.
"I hope to promote the unique Shanghai culture to people living outside China," he said.
